BTD Radio Interviews Indie Artist, Cloven Skies
BTD Radio Interviews Indie Artist, Cloven Skies
Where are you from?
Cloven Skies : I am from Nashville, TN and was born in FL and raised all over. Like Johnny Cash, I’ve been everywhere man.
Who are your band members?
Cloven Skies : Cloven Skies is a solo project by me. I do all the writing, instrumentation, vocals, recording, mixing and artwork. I have played in bands before and it’s a blast. Finding the time to tour with a family is hard, so I work on my music after my family is asleep.
One of my favorite songs of yours is Dreams. How did that song come about?
Cloven Skies : The song Dreams was written after I received my first label offer. I was submitting my music to be reviewed by online companies and after posting the song ANTHEM for review; I got an email from a label. They included the contract and wanted me to sign right away. That was the motivation to finish my album. In the beginning of the song I am talking to my dreams and ambitions. The sub chorus and hook I am speaking to the listeners. The message of the song is the distance between your dreams and your reality is called action. Get up and make your dreams come to fruition.
You told us that you write to inspire, exhilarate, motivate. What song have you written to date that inspires you? What song exhilarates you? And what song motivates you?
Cloven Skies : Hmmm. Songs that I have written that inspire, exhilarate and motivate me? Hands down, Fresh Hope is the song that inspires and motivates me. That was the first song I wrote on the album Hope on the Horizon. I have partied a little too hard in the past and thought I might die. Playing Fresh Hope on repeat, kept me cool until I was able to chill out a little bit. Lesson learned kids … drugs are bad.) If you feel like you’re going to die, you should probably go to the hospital J. As far as a song that exhilarates me… I am going to have to go way back for that. I recorded a song called Press On. Every time I hear it I get pumped up.
I see you are donating half your music sales to charity. Could you tell us a little about that?
Cloven Skies : Half the Sky is a charity that seeks to put an end to the oppression of women and children worldwide through a transmedia project that uses video, websites, games, blogs and other educational tools both to raise awareness of women’s issues and also to provide concrete steps to fight these problems and empower women and children.
As a child of domestic abuse, this cause is important to me. People don’t realize that in every state, thousands of women and children are abused everyday physically, sexually, emotionally, and mentally but aren’t aware that there is help. It’s up to all of us to make a difference. Usually in every major city, there are local networks that serve survivors of domestic violence. These networks usually provide victims the assistance they need to live safely, through shelter, transitional housing, and/or outreach services. If you know anyone who is in that situation, contact your nearest Domestic Violence Network/Shelter to help empower victims to live their lives without violence.
Where did the name Cloven Skies come from?
Cloven Skies : Cloven Skies was taken from the Christmas Carol, It Came Upon A Midnight Clear. It was the Christmas season in 2006 and I was trying to decide on a name. I heard Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music) recording of the song on the radio. I heard the lyrics: Still through the cloven skies they come, with peaceful wings unfurled; and still their heavenly music floats, o’er all the weary world. That section of the verse hit me and stuck with me. After about a week of debating between all the names, I went with Cloven Skies. With every thing we do, there are ultimately two things we put out… Good energy that heals or bad energy that destroys. I wanted my band name to represent what my music was about. I want my art to be a positive force that nourishes listeners with hope, love and positive energy.
Do you have any other hobbies besides, obviously, making music?
Cloven Skies : Outside of music, I love having get-togethers with all my close friends and family. We usually have a large bonfire, amazing BBQ and a lot of laughs. I love going fishing overnight with close friends; I love spending as much time as possible with my two toddlers and my lovely wife.
Lastly, lately I have been getting into gardening. We never know how much time we have with our loved ones, so embrace every minute of it and have some fun.
What is the special place that takes you away from all the worlds troubles?
Cloven Skies : No matter where I am living, or if I am traveling, there is always one place that takes me away from all the worlds troubles, and that’s Nature. Where I am emerged in nature, I understand life better, my stress goes down and my creativity goes up.
I hear your music was featured in a commercial. Congratulations! Could you tell our BTD Radio listeners all about it? What went through your mind when you found out?
Cloven Skies : The Instrumental to my song Cant Stop Me was featured in a commercial for the Indoor Gardening Giant, www.HIDHut.com. If you’re into hydroponics, I highly recommend them. I was submitting my music anywhere online that gave me the opportunity. I found their site and submitted to be their artist of the month on Grow University. A few months later they contacted me stating that they wanted to use my song in a commercial. Since I am into gardening, I worked out a deal with them and they featured it.
What’s the most awesome project you have ever worked on?
Cloven Skies : The coolest project I have ever worked on was with two other artists, SPW and Red-I. We called ourselves Agents of the Universe. When I lived in Fl, 2 of my good buddies and I worked third shift. We all happened to be solo artists. After we got off work, we would head to my house, get to feeling good and hit record. There was a song we recorded called Scream Out. It’s based off the song Dreamer by John Lennon. I could listen to that song all day. If I get any requests on www.ReverbNation.com/ClovenSkies, I will put it up for your listening pleasure. What made it so awesome was just sharing a very fun and creative experience with other like-minded people.
Why do you write?
Cloven Skies : I write in general is for the love of music and experimentation. As a solo artist is takes a very long time to write, compose and record all the parts to a song. Hearing the finished product, a culmination of all my creativity, is well worth the time and effort it takes.
My newest album Hope on the Horizon was written for my two little girls. The reason behind it, is that if anything ever happened to me, I wanted them to grow up knowing who their father was, what he stood for, how he will always believe in them and have his fatherly advice to help then in life when they need it.
What’s your favorite song of all time?
Cloven Skies : My favorite song… Now that is a hard one. I love Louis Armstrong, Lana Del Ray, CCR, Jethro Tull, Alabama, BTNH, Our Lady Peace, Led Zeppelin, Ella Fitzgerald, Gorillaz and many, many more! I would have to say, if on a deserted island and I could have only one song to listen too for ever, it would have to be: (drum roll) The Joker by The Steve Miller Band. Every time it comes on I get excited and crank it up. No matter how down I am, that song always makes me smile. 😀
