BTR Radio Interviews, Boomerang Gaines
Well hello there Boomerang Gaines. I just love your name, how did you come up with such an inventive name?
Boomerang Gaines: My last name is Gaines and the Boomerang comes from no matter what you go through in life you can always bounce back from it, you can Boomerang!!! And thank you!!!
Before we get deep in this interview, could you tell our listeners where you are from?
Boomerang Gaines: I am from Ypsilanti, Michigan… 30miles west Detroit.
Your song “My Love” is very catchy. Could you fill us in on this song? What is it about?
Boomerang Gaines: “My Love” is a very unique song because a lot of people think it’s a sample but it is not, neither the beat or the chorus. A older lady named Shay is singing on the chorus and when her and the producer Moneyhands (who made the beat) put the track together they were expecting a song about a relationship. So that’s what I did! But my relationship I wanted to talk about was my love in the street life (the good days) no shootings,no drama, no problems. In lamest terms “it aint always bad in the streets”
Do you write your own songs? How long does it take you to complete from start to finish?
Boomerang Gaines: Yes I create my own music but I do not write, I haven’t wrote a song in 2years. I punch in without no pen or pad nor do I use my phone. Everything comes through experience or just my creative artistic thoughts. Sometimes I can do a song n less than hour, then other times I might do a verse or two and come back to it another day.
Who is Queen “Karma?
Boomerang Gaines: “Queen” is a artist that I help manage, she is very talented and has a passion for music like no other. I don’t know what made me think to create “Karma” but I wanted to show people I can make real music outside “street music and party music”. Also its little boys and girls all over the world can relate to “Karma” even if its just a small part of the story.
When did you start to realize you had such a talent for music? Do you have a musical family?
Boomerang Gaines: Growing up in the pryjects you see a lot of good and bad on a daily basis so I would write in poetry format based on how my day was whether it was good or bad. So really ive been doing music since I was about 6 without me knowing. That’s y its so easy now for me to just freestyle songs because I wrote so much growing up.
I was watching your video “Tuff Life.” Great video by the way. How long did that video take for you to put together? Is this song or any of your songs from your own personal life experiences?
Boomerang Gaines: All my songs are from personal experience or create thought of reality. I did that video kind of spare of the moment and it was my first video I ever did, wish you could have saw my newer ones and thank you!
What is it about music that you love? How about any dislikes?
Boomerang Gaines: I love the whole process of making a song from taking a small idea and finding a beat to coming up with the chorus to recording it then hearing the song done. I get a rush and love performing also. I dislike when other artists try to sound like other artists it waters the hiphop industry down at times. Creativity is the key to all forms or art not even just music.
I see there are several artists that you collaborate with. How does this come about? Are these artists you know or from online?
Boomerang Gaines: I choose wisely who I collaborate with so yes i know them personally although I have a few from online. Its just a creative process of having a ear of who voices sound good together or not or if the song is a good catch.
We are going to ask you a few typical interview questions such as, who were your childhood influences?
Boomerang Gaines: Jay-z ,2Pac and Blade Icewood
What do you like to do to chillax?
Boomerang Gaines: Play with my kids and read…those two things take me away from all the stress in the world.
If I was a fly on the wall in the studio, what would I see and hear that day?
Boomerang Gaines: LOL, you would see no pens, pencils, or paper. You would hear beats being scimmed through, and a tab bit of laughing. You would not see many people because others can be a distraction, I do like for a girl or two to be present because they wont lie about the music you are making about whether its good or bad.
Well we have asked you a ton of questions and I only have a couple more left. What is your most favorite song to date that you composed and why? Which song is a fan favorite?
Boomerang Gaines: I don’t have a favorite song ive composed because I make so many different types and feels of music and I put my all into every song so they are all my favorite. Fan favorite would be “My Love”, I cant go anywhwere in my city without someone playing it in their car or bringing it up.
We would love for you to tell our listeners where they can find your music? Any up and coming projects? Tour dates, etc? If you have any special shout-outs, please feel free to do them now.
