BTD Radio Interviews, Lil Stan
BTD Radio presents….Lil Stan! Welcome to the studio!
Welcome to the studio! I am so excited to get into this interview with you and talk about your music but let’s first tell our listeners where you are from. Tell us about your hometown?
Lil Stan : I’m from Joliet, IL, born and raised. A small town, everyone knows each other. LOL! Shout out to the 815!!!
I want to let our listeners know that you are an instrumentalist and a darn good one at that! I can feel your music. So much soul goes into your production! With that said, how do you come up with the titles of your songs when there are no words?
Lil Stan : Thanks. The titles are the words that I would say, if I did sing on the song. Like you mentioned, a lot of soul goes into my music, and being able to get my point across with just music, and a title is amazing.
When did you start playing the guitar? Do you still have that first guitar?
Lil Stan : Well…I actually got my first guitar at age 12, (Fender Telecaster) I knew then, that I wanted to play, but at the time I didn’t take it seriously. I wanted to be a basketball player. LOL! I didn’t start playing until I was 17 years old. I don’t have still have it, but it played great. I wish I still had that guitar.
I understand that you are a solo performer, that can be very rewarding and also a bit hard because you have to tackle everything yourself. What challenges have you tackled and overcome?
Lil Stan : I perform with backing tracks, of my music. This helps for small performances, but I do have a backing band now for big shows.
Your music moves across many genres, personally I really like variety. Which genre do you find yourself swaying more towards?
Lil Stan : My musical background is in Gospel music. I love all genres, and I believe music is for everyone, so I try to make something for everyone. I can’t narrow it down to one genre, but I’m a blend of R&B/Soul, Hip-hop, Jazz, and a bit of Rock, I guess I’m starting my own genre. LOL!
Could you tell our listeners about your song, “How I Feel?” What are you feeling in this song? Which song your most favorite?
Lil Stan : That song was a reflection of how I was feeling when I made it. I was feeing smooth, relaxed, and calm. I wanted it to have an R&B type sound with a mix of Rock. I wanted it be something you can listen to anytime of the day, and the rock guitar just made it sexy. LOL!
I love guitars! They are sexy; they can speak in so many forms depending on which guitar you pick up. How many guitars do you have? Which one is your most favorite?
Lil Stan : You are right! I have 4 guitars. 3 electric, and 1 acoustic. I love the sound of my PRS Custom 22. This guitar has it’s way of getting it’s point across. I use it a lot in my songs.
How do you start your song process? Does it start out with a click track? Do you just pick up the guitar and make a song?
Lil Stan : It starts in my head. Sometimes I can be watching TV, and a tune just comes to me, and then I go grab my guitar, and go from there.
If I were in the studio with you today, what would you be working on? What would I see?
Lil Stan : I would be working on unfinished songs; I have so much music, that everyone has yet to hear. You would be the first to hear it all.
You have been asked to describe your music to someone but you can only use 12 words, go ahead… start describing.
Lil Stan : Feeling, Vibe, Funky, Relaxing, Real, Art, Timeless, Classic, Urban, Jazzy, Soulful, and Fresh.
We are going to ask you a few typical interview questions such as, who were your childhood influences and do you see a little bit of those influences in yourself?
Lil Stan : My childhood influences were my Uncle (Cornelius) who plays the guitar and a local guitar player (Nate Robinson). These were the guys that showed me the ropes, and the rest was history. Sure enough I listened to the famous players, like B.B.King, Santana..etc, but my Uncle, and Nate shaped me, and I see both of those guys in my guitar playing.
I see you have an EP coming out in June, how exciting! Could you tell our listeners all about it?
Lil Stan : Yes!! Can’t wait! It’s a blend of Jazz, Hip-Hop, and R&B. It will be available June 1st on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play. All digital stores! Make sure you guys go get it!
So you were born into a musical family, so very cool! Could you tell us about that? That must have been a huge benefit for you.
Lil Stan : Yes I was. My dad sings, plays the organ, and he is a Pastor. My Uncle, as mentioned earlier plays guitar, and he sings. It was hard to escape it, although I tried. LOL! I just embraced it, and went from there.
It was a pleasure interviewing you Lil Stan! We would love for you to tell our listeners where they can find your music? If you have any special shout-outs, please feel free to do them now.
